James Bain - Surrey 3rd Militia

The file at the National Archives contains various accounts, returns and letters, many signed by James Bain as Quarter Master.

The file contains a letter which states "J.E?. Edwardes commissioned as Quarter Master 3rd Surrey Local Militia ... 29 March 1809 - See Gazette 6 June 1809." [Actually London Gazette Dated 3 June 1809, Page 810].

According to a "List of Officers serving in the 3rd Surrey Regiment of Militia", dated 28 June 1814, James Bain was commissioned as Quarter Master 29 May 1809. I have not managed to find his commission in the London Gazette.

The accounts shown that the following payments were made to James Bain during the period of his service. Records for 1809 and 1816 appear to missing, but one of the last letters in the file signed by James Bain is dated 10 December 1816.

It would appear that the regiment was abolished before 1817. It does not appear in the Army List for 1817.

On 15 March 1817, James is described as Paymaster of the 3rd Surrey Militia, but in 1821 he is described as the late Paymaster of the local militia.

It would appear that James was paid over £90 a year during the six or seven years he was Quarter Master of the 3rd Surrey Militia. During this period relatively large sums of money are passing through his hands to pay for food and equipment for the 3rd Surrey.
