William and Jane Bumby were living in Manchester by 1834 (rates books on fmp). They consistently appear in the censuses in the Manchester area. in the censuses his age consistently matches 1799/1800.

There is an oddity in that amongst the baptisms of William and Jane Bumby children, William is consistently a Tailor except for Charles Wise Bumby's baptism, where William was a Book Keeper living in Saville Street (Hunslet), not in Chapel Allerton as was usual. So, was there perhaps another William Bumby married to a Jane? He might have been the William born 1807, rather than Elisabeth Foster Bumby's son William, but I cannot find any further mention of this Charles, even without the 'Wise'.

To confuse matters further, a William Bumby married in 1836 to Mary Gilbert, and said he was a Cloth Dresser of Woodhouse. One of his witnesses was a John Foster. There is a DR for a Mary Bumby of Leeds in the last quarter of 1845, but no burial record.

What seems to be another William Bumby claiming to come from Woodhouse, has several children, starting at Leeds c.1840 and continuing at Lindley near Huddersfield, along with wife Sarah nee Sutcliffe. He was the son of a Joseph Bumby, and was born 1808.
