Leonard Cross, a farm labourer of Moreton Pinkney, enlisted for the Royal Navy at Birmingham on 9th July 1913. His age was given as 19 years 7 months and date of birth recorded as 1st December 1893, a full year earlier than shown in the baptisms register for St. Mary's. Naval records state he was 5' 5" tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and a distinctive scar on the back of his left hip, he was also able to swim: religion - Wesleyan.

He was sent to the Recruitment Depot at Deal, Dover from date of enlistment until 1st July 1914 when he transferred to Plymouth. During April, May, June and July he passed his Infantry, field Training and Musketry Drills. Records show that his character was classed as "very good" and his ability as "satisfactory".

Special Service Particulars

27th August to 31th August 1914 - landed at Ostend
19th September 1914 - service at Dunkirk
12th October 1914 - defence of Antwerp

Private Leonard Cross died in action 12th May 1915, aged twenty years.
