The R.M.S. Oruba, under the command of Captain Lindsay Hay, left Gravesend on January 7 at noon, had a fine passage down Channel, arriving at Plymouth at 9.5 a.m. on the 8th. After embarking a number of passengers sailed at 7.30 p.m. Fine weather was again experienced to Gibraltar, arriving there at 7.15 a.m. on January 12, sailing at 11.15 a.m. Unpleasant weather was experienced from Gibraltar to Marseilles, strong easterly winds, with heavy rainsqualls and cold, gloomy weather prevailing, delaying the arrival till 3.S0 p.m. January 14. A number of passengers were embarked, sailing at 6 p.m. Arrived at Naples on January 16 at 8.20 a.m., and after embarking the mails for Ceylon, Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, amounting to 777 bags, and a number of passengers, making a full complement in the saloon, sailed at 1.25 a.m. on the 17th. The Oruba arrived at Port Said at 6.60 a.m. on January 20, having had a fine passage from Naples. Here a large number of passengers were landed en route for Cairo. After coaling entered the canal at 0.45 p.m. Had a good passage through, and arrived at Suez at 4.45 a.m. on the 21st. A departure from Suez was taken at 6.20 a.m. Had strong southerly gale in the southern portion of the Red Sea, passed Perim at 9 p.m. on January 24, and Cape Guardaqui at 8 a.m. on the 26th, arriving at Colombo at 9 a.m. January 31. Here a quantity of tea was taken for Australia and New Zealand, and a number of passengers were landed, sailing at 6.45 p.m. On the run from Colombo to Albany the S.E. trades were met with in 5 S., and continued moderate until 18 S., freshening from thence to a fresh to strong gale with high sea. This weather continued till arrival at Albany, causing considerable delay to the vessel's progress. Arrived at Albany on February 11 at 5.25 a.m., landed and received passengers, and discharged cargo, sailing at 11.45 p.m. Across the Bight had easterly winds with heavy swell.
