The subject of the proposed Cartwright Memorial Hall was raised on the minutes of both the Finance and the Libraries, Art Gallery, and Museums Committees. The minute of the latter committee was to the effect that tenders should be accepted amounting to a total of £51,470 9s. 7d. - Ald Poppewell, moving the former resolution, mentioned that the Mayor had agreed to bear the cost of a painting of Lord Masham by one of the best artists in the country, to be hung in the hall. The tenders are as follows:-
William Farnish,
excavators, masons, and bricklayers, £38,335;
W.H. Pick, carpenters and joiners, £5,315;
Braithwaite and Co., plumbers and glaziers, £1,320;
J. Hankin, painters, £210;
Hill and Nelson, slaters, £179 15s.;
T. Cordingley and Son, plasterers, £2,140;
R.H. Dewhirst, ironfounders and smiths, £3,382;
total, £51,470 9s. 7d. [sic sum of the above is £50881 15s.]
These were accepted.
