A ship's purser is the person on a ship responsible for the handling of money on board. See Wikipedia. The volume contains an index of Pursers. Most pursers only sailed once, although some sailed as many as 10 times. Louis seems to have sailed 3 times.
Officers on East Indiamen were allowed to carry their own goods on the ship. The amounts varied; the purser was normally allowed 3 tons, the commander 56 tons and the carpenter 1 ton. As the Harriet was one of the smaller ships employed by the East Inda Company these amounts were somewhat reduced. See Page 66, Appendix - The Indulgence of Private Trade
Officers on East Indiamen were also allowed to carry their own stores on the outward journey. The amounts varied; the purser was allowed
16 Dozen of Wine or Beer
2 Firkins Butter
1 Cwt. Cheese
½ Ditto. Grocery
4 Quarter Cases Pickles
See Page 73, Appendix - Particulars of Stores, Outward
Officers on East Indiamen were paid, monthly according to their rank. The purser was paid £2, the commander £10 and the carpenter £4-10s. See Page 75, Appendix - List of Wages.
The volume contains an index of Ships. The Harriet sailed 5 times.
The volume contains an index of Captains and Ships Officers. Captain William Lynch sailed 8 times, 5 times as Captain of the Harriet. He sailed as 4th Officer in 1793/4, 2nd Officer in 1795/6 and 1st Officer in 1798/9.
