War Diary of Australian 48th Battalion - April 1916

Place Date Summary of Events and Information
SERAPEUM 3/4/16 261 Reinforcements marched in. they appear to have had very little training. all except those from 8th Training Battalion had rifles. a medical inspection was held and 4 cases of V.D. were discovered. men should be examined before being dispatched from Training Battalions.
RAIL HEAD 9/4/16 The Battalion moved out from SERAPEUM on 6th inst at 0745. and Route marched to RAILHEAD, a distance of about 5 miles. arriving at 0930 the men marched very well and have improved in march discipline since their last march from Tel el Kebir. Work carried out during the week had been mostly Close Order Drill, and Musketry Instruction a little time was given to Artillery Formations, Infantry in Attack and Out Posts.
RAILHEAD 10/4/16 During the week ending 10/4/16. To Hospital 12 OR From Hospital. 1 Officer, Lt MORRIS. 2 OR. Transferred to other Units 1 Officer 5 OR Transferred from Other Unit and reported for duty. 1 Officer 1 OR.
RAILHEAD SERAPEUM 17/4/16 Joined the Battalion during the week 1 Officer 7 OR. Transferred to other Units 6 OR. Admitted to Hospital 17 OR. Discharged from Hospital 17 OR. The Weather has been very trying. on the 13th & 14th. very little work could be done on account of Khornseen. The men have no shade accept tents. Mess Sheds are being Erected by the Battalion. this in my opinion should have been done by Contract the time spent by men employed is lost for training purposes.
RAILHEAD SERAPEUM 17/4/16 I consider it a mistake to Cut down the ration of bread also the bread received is of inferior quality and mostly squashed flat or broken into small pieces. It is getting too hot for bacon. Something also should be issued in lieu. Training is carried out daily 0600 to 0800. 0920 to 110 1600 to 1800. breakfast at 0815. by purchasing cooking pots I have been able to issue soup at 0515 this is much appreciated by the men.
RAILHEAD SERAPEUM 30/4/16 ANZAC DAY 25th Battalion marched to SERAPHEUM. the sports were a great success. 153 Reinforcements reported and were taken on the strength they are a very good lot of men and included quite a number of returned men who saw service on GALLIPOLI.

The Equipping of the Battalion is taking a long time, although the Battalion was formed at the end of February up to date with the exception of an Officers Mess Cart no Transport has been issued. this makes it very difficult.

The G.O.C. 4th DIVISION inspected the Battalion and informed me that he considered training was progressing satisfactorily. The last lot of Reinforcements are rather backward in their training.
