  May 2nd Training in Musketry Carried out by the Battalion. Teams Specially trained for Divisional Competition, We are at a disadvantage being very short of men
  5th 9th Outpost Scheme carried out and Company in attack. Health good. Divisional match carried out, the men spent two very instructive and interesting days. all the work was Carried out under Service Conditions.
  11th Special Classes held for Officers and men. The work of the day following being Carried out the night before between 4.20 pm and 6.20 pm
  12th Division reviewed by Corp Commander on site of Rifle Range at Brele. Work of the Division reviewed since its inception. The 48th Bn specially mentioned for good work at Pozieres on Aug 6th 1916 & also at Bullecourt 11th April 1917
  13th 12th Brigade Horse Show at Bresle? Wood. 48th Bn won Best Turned out 1st Line Transport (200 Francs & Salver 10????), also four other first Prizes & three seconds
  14th Left Hennecourt Woods for Brice? Huts at Aveling (VVr6 a 3 2)
  May 15th Instructions received Division leaving 1st Anzac Corp to join 2nd Anzac Corp 2nd Army Special attention given to instruction on gas drill, gas lectures, gas duties inspection of gas helmets.
  16th Entrained at AVELUY at 3.30 AM. Arrived BAILLEUL 5.10 p.m. Troops & transport detrained in 32 minutes. Billets at A.15 Sheet 36 NW mens health excellent.
  17th Battalion Instructed in training of organised Raiding parties Special training finished on under specialist officers
  18th Corp Commander (2nd ANZAC) met all unit commanders at Bde HQ "B" tery? inspected by Corp Commander.
  19th Left Billets at A15 36NW at 6:pm for DOU DOU FARM B5d Sheet 36NN arrived 8:45 pm Instructions to report to C O H.A.G on 2oth
  20th Instructions received Bn to work at night unloading? heavy ammunition for heavy artillery - men to rest in day time.
  May 21st 22nd Bn unloading heavy ammunition at night Specialists not employed on this job, but train under specialist officers in day
  24th Army Commander (Fifth) met Unit Commanders at Bde HQ
  25th Still unloading ammunition 14 OR Reinforcements received
  26th In view of projected attack in MESSINES - WYTSHAETE RIDGE parties of officers & BCOs are now making daily trips to front line to familiarise themselves with the routes, country & proposed objectives
  May 27th Now resting in day time working at night Specialist training hurried on.
  28th Preliminary Orders (Operation Order 103. 12th Aust. Inf Bde) received re attack on - MESSINES - WYTSCHAETE RIDGE
  29th Officers, N C O, & parties of men visit line daily. In the afternoons all ranks trained in use of Yukon pack. Each afternoon Company Commanders inspect companies daily in "Battle Order" to make sure of equipment being complete
  30th Officers surplus gear & OR packs removed to Dump in BAILLEUL, Troops now in possession of "Battle Order" plus one Blanket.
  30th 12 Officers 2 W Os (2nd Class) 12 N C os & 126 O R to report to MORBERGUE? Reinforcement Camp. This is our quota of Offices & OR who will not go into action with use & includes a percentage of all specialists
  May 31st Troops still on night work. afternoon devoted to checking platoon organisation, & battle equipment also demonstrations in Yukon Packs & organisation of working parties.

Officers conference in reference to attackm & discussion on situation generally. Officers lectures to NCOs & men regarding their role in the attack

Mens health excellent.

142 OR & 2 Officers reported from Hospital & 4th A D B D. during month

Total evacuations for month 34 (one accidentally wounded).
