On Friday evening last a very entnusiastic meeting of the members of Wesley Harriers was held in the hall. Mr C. C. Cutts presided, and after some conversational talk it was decided to hold a six-mile run on Saturday 28th inst, along the old course, and also a ten-mile run the following fortnight. It was decided if possible to send a team to Perth to contest in the ten-mile championship, several members feeling confident that if they were not successful in winning the run would be of great benefit to members. Entries for next Saturday's race will close on Thursday night at 8 o'clock with Mr Cutts. So far the following have entered J. Wilkerson. C. Wells Casserley (2), D. Cara, C. Mettam, Mayersbeth, Cooper (2), Stubbs, Nottage, A. Williams, Wolfenden. Any young man can take part by sending in his name.

On Saturday last, despite the inclemency of the weather, a goodly number of people assembled at the Town Hall to witness the start and finish of the six mile run organised by Wesley Guild Harrier Club. Out of thirteen entrants six undertook the journey, and despite the roughness of the day made good time. At 3.30 Mr. Garcia started the men on the journey, those who faced the starter being J. Wilkerson, W. Casserley, C. Mettam, Mayersbeth, G. Cooper, and A. Cooper. The course was from the Town Hall to three miles along the Seabrook road and return. On the out journey the runners kept together till the steep hill at the brewery was met with, when they began to trail out. After negotiating the hill a pace was set for the turn point, which was reached by Wilkerson, Mettam, Casserley, and Mayersbeth simultaneously. On the return journey in the face of great odds (a heavy head wind) the four plugged valiantly along in close proximity. When the old Post Office was reached the pace increased, and when they came in view it was noticed that Wilkerson was in the lead, the other three being together. After a ding-dong go Wilkerson passed the post first in forty-two minutes, followed by Mayersbeth a fifth of a minute later, and Casserley and Mettam practically making a dead heat for third place in 42¼ minutes. Then came G. Cooper, followed by A. Cooper some minutes later. Considering the heavy head wind they had to contend against on the home journey the time recorded by the runners was excellent. Next Saturday week a ten-mile run will eventuate, entries for which can be left with Mr W. P. Rumble, "Advertiser" office, of Mr C. C. Cutts, the entrance fee being fixed at 2s each. From this run a team of six will be chosen to represent the Guild at the Eight Hours' demonstration at Perth on October 21 for the Harriers' Championship.

This afternoon a ten-mile run under the auspices of Wesley Guild Harrier Club takes place. The start will be from the Town Hall at 3 p.m., thence along the Seabrook road to a point five miles out and return. A good deal of interest is centred in the event, for it has been decided to choose the team to represent the club at the Eight Hours Sports to be held in Perth on the 21st inst., to contest in the ten miles championship run. Training has been carried out assiduously by competitors, and it is anticipated that some good times will be put up. The following entries have been received:- J . Wilkerson, G. Cooper, Stiles, W. Casserley, Mayersbeth, C. Mettam, Hunter, Temple, T. Cooper, H. Butler, B. Stevens, Wells, W. Cooper. Runners are reminded that the run will start punctually at the scheduled time. The first prize is a gold medal, and the second a silyer medal.

The ten-mile race in connection with the Wesley Harrier Club took place on Saturday afternoon, the course being from the Town Hall to a point five miles on the Seabrook road and return to the Town Hall. Of the eleven entrants seven faced the starter (Mr R. Garcia), and shortly after three o'clock they were despatched. At the finishing point there was a fair attendance of spectators, and when at about 4.12 Jack Wilkerson hove in sight it was recognised that he had put up good time, and a minute later when he crossed the line he was received with cheers. He did the ten miles in 65 minutes, which is considered to be really good. Young Butler was only three-quarters of a minute behind, the winner, Whilst A. Mettam (quite a lad) was a quarter of a minute away third. Mayesbeth [sic] finished one and a half minutes later, Whilst Casserley was three-quarters of a minute further behind. The times were:-
J. Wilkerson, 1hr 5min.
Butler, 1hr 5¾min.
Mettam, 1hr 6min.
Mayesbeth [sic], 1hr 7½min.
Casserley, 1hr 8¼min.
Stephens and Temple did not finish.
The team to represent Northam Wesley Harriers in the ten-mile championship race, to be run on Monday next (Eight Hours Day) at Perth, is as follows J. Wilkerson, C. Mettam, Mayersbeth, W. Casserley, Butler, and Stevens. Emergencies: Temple, Stiles, and Wells. The team will leave by the 4.10 train on Saturday afternoon.
Mr C. C. Cutts, organiser of the Wesley Harriers, yesterday received two handsome gold medals, which were presented, at the bachelors' social last night, to W. Casserley (fastest local time in the recent run against Y.M.C.A. Harriers) and J. Wilkerson (winner of the six-mile race on Saturday week last). Both trophies are excellent specimens of the gold smith's handicraft.
A very important meeting of the Northam Wesley Harriers will be held next Friday evening at Wesley Hall at 8 o'clock. A full attendance is requested.

The first match played in Northam this season took place at the Westend ground on Saturday afternoon, when the Wesley Club arranged a game between the married and single players. Twenty-six enthusiasts took part in the match, the married men, who were in the minority, having the assistance of several of the single single [sic] men. Upon going to the wickets the married team set to work in earnest, and batted with such vigor that the scored showed 230 before the last wicket fell. Tom Boston showed good hitting for 103 (retired), and B. Semmens put together 55 before. being run out.
The single men could only manage 83, despite the fact that they batted two men more than their opponents. L. Haschmedt and A. Byfield tied for top score with 16 each, the only other batsman to reach double figures being J. Caddy. C. C. Cutts skippered the married team, and J. Mayersbeth had charge of the single men. On Saturday the Wesley Club inaugurated the season under most auspicious conditions. A large number of players and enthusiasts turned up, and a most enjoyable game resulted. The married men, who made a good stand, were unable to bat their full team, such veterans as the Rev. C. H. Haimner, J. Purslowe, and C. C. Cutts (capt.) deciding to let the single men have an innings. Some good crisp cricket was seen, especially from Easton (who retired with 103 to his credit) and Semmens (55) showed good form, whilst in the single ranks Byfield (16), Maschmedt (16), and J. Caddy (10) showed much promise. T. Caddy behind the sticks was in good form. Scores:-

To-morrow afternoon will see a commencement made with the programme of fixtures drawn up by the delegates of the different clubs competing for the Northam premiership. Although late in starting the season the devotees of King Willow give evidence of having at last discarded a great deal of the lethargy which has of recent years strangled the game in Northam, and if they continue their renewed energy through the next four months a very successful season should be witnessed. There was a record attendance of players at the opening scratch match at West Northam last Saturday, and present appearances indicate that at least three of the four competing teams will have full elevens to-morrow. A very pleasing and healthy aspect of the coming matches is the number of promising juniors who will take the field this season, and with the guidance of some of the older capable cricketers which Northam undoubtedly possesses, some good batsmen and bowlers should be developed.
On the West Northam ground the newly-formed Wesley team will try conclusions with an eleven gathered from the country players of the Southern Brook, Jennapullen and the Grass Valley clubs. Wesley have a good number of enthusiastic young players to select from, and they have two or three old heads in command to keep them together. Their efforts will be watched with interest. The country team anticipate some little difficulty in mustering a strong eleven for the first two matches, but after Christmas, when the harvest is gathered, they will be in a position to put in the field a combination strong in all departments of the game. They will include several players who have previously taken part in Northam matches, and have a large number of new-comers in reserve.
At East Northam the team formed at the St. John's Church will meet the West Northam players. The Anglicans have succeeded in putting on their list several tried and capable exponents of the game, and have several juniors of promise. They anticipate making a big bid for premiership honors. West Northam, are the most backward of the four teams in getting their eleven together, but the capabilities of those whom they so far have secured are undoubted. A few more juniors and some of the older players of the West-end are urged to roll up and help the game along.
The request is made that all players will make it a special point of being on the ground fully prepared to start punctually at three o'clock. A fine is attached to late starting, and possibly forfeiture of the match.
To-morrow's teams will be:-
St. John's. - Marshall, Morrell, Easton, Hawtin, Dempster, Lawson, Richards, Thackrah, Thacker, Stephen, Schramm, Spathett, Viveash, and W. Meeres. To be chosen on the ground.
Country. - J. Beard, J. Martin, H. Carter, Enright (2), Nimo, G. Morcell, M. Sermon, F. Watson, and others.
Wesley. - J. Caddy, R. Marshall, T. Caddy, H. Byfield, A. Taylor, E. Cook, R. Porter, W. Turnock, J. Mayersbeth, C. Hammer, D. Carra, C. Mettam, W. Casserly, A. Christmass, G. Mettam, B. Henley, J. P. Camm, G. Parsons. Team to be chosen on the ground at 2.45.
To-morrow night a meeting of delegates from the four clubs forming the Northam Association will be held in the Mechanics' Institute, for the purpose of completing arrangements for the conduct of the Association for this season. There are a number of matters requiring the consideration of the delegates, and a full attendance is requested at 8 o'clock.

The West-end ground was occupied by the Wesley and Country players. A full team was available for the church, but the country team could not muster an eleven. On going to the wickets the juniors performed disappointingly, and at the fall of the last wicket only 36 runs showed on the board. D. Carra and J. Mayersbeth did their best to stem the tide, but seven out of the eleven failed to break their "duck". Herb Carter was the destroying angel, taking five wickers for ten runs, and J. Beard secured four for 22.
On going to the wickets the country players hit out merrily, and although they batted seven men they passed the century by three, W. Hopkins, J. Beard and T. Enright performing creditably.
At their second attempt the Wesley did much betrer, and chiefly through the agency of D. Carra put on 51 for the loss of four wickets. The scores were:-

Wesley mustered a full complement, but the country team were not so successful, putting only seven men in the field. The batsmen did not set out for great achievements, being the first day, hence individual scores were were [sic] not high. Wesley took the wood first, the best effort in the first innings being that of D. Carra (15), who notched 30 in the second batting. W. Hopkins (29). T. Enright (23), and J. Wesley, with four wickets down for 51, resumed their innings against the Country team on Saturday, but with the exception of A. Taylor and E. Cock, none of the batsmen troubled the bowlers, and only 35 runs were added before the innings closed.
With 19 runs wanted to win, the Country team took the crease, and knocked up the necessary runs with out the loss of a wicket. They continued batting, and gave the Wesley field a deal of leather-hunting. J. Beard did the chief scoring, and after passing the century by seven he retired. Included in his score was fifteen 4's and a 6. G. Greenwood also made a strong bid for the century, and reached 89 before being bowled by Byfield. The innings closed for 298. J. Caddy was the only bowler with any success, securing six wickets for 91 runs. The complete scores were :-

The first matches for the season, under the Northam Association were completed on Saturday. Both games were finished right out, and the winning teams, Country and St. John's, have the same number of points to their credit. Under the system adopted by the Association for allotting points for the premiership this season, every team winning by an innings secures four points; a win on two innings counts three points; a win on the first innings only two points; and a draw one point.
The chief feature of the Country Wesley match on the second day was the forceful batting of Jim Beard and Greenwood. The former retired after passing the century, and the latter got to within 11 of the three figures.
At the East Northam ground, T. Easton, for the St. John's club, demonstrated that in addition to being able to bat and keep wickets, he is a bowler of ability. In the first innings he took three wickets in one over for three runs; and in the second innings he secured three for 14.
The fielding of the St. John's team in the West Northam second innings is deserving of mention. It was particularly sound and keen, and the fieldsmen were rewarded by running out West's two chief performers with the bat - A. Sutcliffe and H. Semmens.
W. Stephen donned the gloves for St. John's in West's second innings, and gave a perfect exhibition of keeping wickets. Followers of the game want to see more of him.
J. Caddy, the Wesley skipper, was easily their best performer with the ball on Saturday. In a score of 298 for nine wickets, he took six for 91.
The Country team found no difficulty in filling up their team on Saturday. After the New Year they should muster a formidable eleven.
West Northam were unfortunate in not being able to get their players together for the second day's play. Half-a-dozen energetic juniors from the West-end are wanted.
To-morrow afternoon the winners of last week's matches will meet on the East Northam ground, and1 the losers try conclusions at the West-end. The play should be very interesting.
The Beverley Association have asked for a match at Northam on Saturday, December 21. A reply has been sent that the Northam cricketers wil [sic] do battle against them on that date.
Members of the Perth High School will also be visiting the Eastern Districts at that time, and have expressed their desire to play a match at Northam also on December 21st. With both the Northam grounds now in order it is to be hoped that second team will also be got together to meet the college boys.
The teams for to-morrow's matches will be chosen from:-
Country. - F. Watson, G. Morrell, E. Enright, H. Carter, G. Greenwood, F. Meeres, G. Carter, A. Carter, J. Martin, W. Nimel, M. Sermon, R. Webb and D. Beard.
St. John's. - Rev. Marshall, J. Richards, J. Hawtin, W. Stephen, T. Easton, R. Thackrah, T. Morrell, A. C. Morrell, E. Viveash, Smitheren, W. Meeres, Thacker, L. Lawson, G. Nicholson and others.
West Northam. - I. Bignell, A. Sutcliffe, H. Semmens, G. O'Connor, W. Williams, Cameron, Jenkins, L. Manning, L. Maschmedt, and others.
Wesley. - R. Marshall, J. Caddy, T. Caddy, E. Cock, C. Mettam, W. Turnock, J. Mayersbeth, C. Hammer, H. Byfield, D. Carra, G. Mettam, A. G. Taylor, Thomas, R. Porter, C. Healland Harber.

On Tuesday evening, in the dining room of the Northam Hotel, a social was held to celebrate the establishment of the Northam Brewing and Aerated Waters' Union, and to say farewell to the organiser of the union, Mr. Rutherford. There was a good attendance, including Mr. T. A. Strempel, manager of the Northam Brewery, and Mr. Gratte, overseer of the brewery's bottling department.
Mr. Cutts, president of the newly formed union, who was in the chair, proposed the toast, "Unionism and Solidarity."
The toast of "Our Guest" was proposed by the chairman, and supported by Mr. Hyde (secretary), Mr. A. O'Shaughnessy, Mr. Bilton, and Mr. Searle, who spoke of Mr. Rutherford's organising ability, and the services he had rendered in forming the Northam union.
Mr. Searle proposed "The Brewing Industry," and referred to the excellent quality of the beverage being produced by Mr. Chapman, brewer at the Northam Brewery. Mr. T. A. Strempel, in responding to the toast, remarked upon the desirability of supporting local industry, especially when the article produced was of the best quality.
The toast of "The Visitors" was honored, after which Messrs O'Shaughnessy and Rutherford proposed "The Press," and the representatives present responded.
During the evening vocal items were rendered by Messrs, Mayersbeth, Thacker, Coutts, W. Casserly, Searle, Bilton and Thompson.

At the Northam Hotel on Tuesday evening last upwards of 35 persons employed, and interested in the brewing and aerated water manufacturing industry foregathered in order to celebrate the formation of the union and the commencement of the new wages agreement, also to farewell the union delegate (Mr A. Rutherford), who purposed leaving the district. The chair was occupied by the president of the union (Mr Coutts), whilst there were also present the manager of the Northam Brewery (Mr T. A. Strempel) and Mr Gratt (overseer of the bottling department).
In proposing the toast of "Unionism and solidarity" the chairman expressed satisfaction at the amicable relationship of the brewery and the employees. It was much better, for employers to deal with employees as a body, instead of individually, inasmuch as it simplified the whole of their transactions. He was voicing the sentiment of every member of the union, when he hoped for a (continuance of the present happy conditions. (Applause.)
Mr Hyde proposed the toast of "Our Guest," and in doing so characterised Mr Rutherford as a very able man who had worked hard for the better working conditions which, now prevailed at the brewery. His loss would be severely felt, and it was the wish of all that he should remain with them.
In supporting the toast, Mr Bilton endorsed the previous speaker's ecoriums of their guest. He would also like to add to his remarks an appreciation of the broad-minded manner in which Mr Strempel and the directors had considered the requests of the employees (Applause).
Mr. O'Shannessey also supported the toast.
In responding Mr Rutherford described the proceedings as the induction of the new union. The present agreement lapsed twelve months hence, when he hoped that a farther term satisfactory to both parties might be stated. In modest tones he offered his thanks for the eulogiums that had been extended him. His stay in Northam had been brief, but happy. (Hear, hears, and applause).
The toast of "The Visitors" was proposed and honored, after which Mr Searle asked them to be upstanding to drink the health of the "Brewing Industry." In doing so it pleased him to remark that the John Barleycorn brew had become more noticeable, until to-day, it was foremost amongst the popular ales. (Hear, hear). He trusted that the dawn of the day when the Northam Brewery led all others was at hand.
Mr Strempel thanked them for the very hearty acceptance of the toast. The industry was a very necessary one, and it behoved the people to support it. Particularly was this so in the case of the local people, who should always support local industries. The townspeople and the farmers, of the district in their own interests and that of the place should help their local manufacturers (Applause).
Mr Gratt, in responding, trusted that the happy conditions at present prevailing in the industry would, continue.
Mr 0'Shannessey proposed "The Press," which Mr Rutherford supported. The "Advertiser" representative present responded.
During the evening vocal and elocutionary items were rendered by the following:- Songs, Messrs Mayersbeth, Coutts, W. Casserley, Searle (encored), Bilton (comic, encored), Searle (comic, encored), Thacker and Thompson (recitation, encored).
The evening passed off very pleasantly. The catering was in the hands of host Leslie, to whom praise is due, whilst the social committee consisted of the following:- Messrs W. Bilton, A. Searle, J. Mayersbeth, Thomas, O'Shannessey, H. Hyde, and B. Coutts.

Recently, and with the object of securing for themselves the rates of pay prevailing in Perth, the employees of the Northam Brewery and Refrigerating Co.. Ltd., together with certain others employed in the aerated water industry, formed themselves into a union under the style of the Northam Brewers and Aerated Water Workers' Union. The officials appointed were as follows:- President, Mr Coutts; delegate, Mr A. Rutherford; secrtary, Mr Hyde; trustees, Messrs R. Spice and R. Beard; committee, Messrs Bilton, Casserley, A. and J. Horsley, O'Shannessey, and F. Tise; auditors, Messrs Mayersbeth and Searle; treasurer, B. Nenke.
The union delegate (Mr Rutherford) approached the directors and placed before them the requirements of the union. After some consideration the management decided to place the men on the same basis as the workers in the industry in the city. An agreement, embodying those terms was drawn up and signed by the workers' representative and the representatives of the Northam Brewery and Messrs Donaldson and Collins. This agreement prescribes the terms contained therein for a period of twelve months, but is terminable by one month's notice on either side.
