My Great-grandfather and my Great-grandmother immigrated from Campo Bosso, Abruzzi, Italy, leaving one daughter behind with relatives.

My Grandfather was born in New York.

My Great-grandfather then left his wife and son in New York while he went to South America, where he died. My Great-grandmother received a letter claiming that her husband had been shot and killed when he was caught cheating at a card game on a riverboat. The letter said that his body was thrown into the river and was eaten by crocodiles. My Great-grandmother fainted when she read the letter, fell into the fireplace and had one of her hands burned off.

My Great-grandmother then returned to Italy, with her son, and remarried to a man named "Franco."

She, her second husband and my Grandfather then immigrated to New York - still leaving her daughter in Italy.

Italian custom was to name first-born sons after their grandfather. Perhaps my great-grandfather was also "Almerico Parente."

The name "Parente" originally meant "son of the Pope." That is, the family was founded by someone who was - or claimed to be - the son of the Pope. I have found texts that say that Pope Gregory XIII (circa 1575) had a son named "Giacomo Boncompagni" who, as a euphemism, was publically referred to as "a close relative of the Pope," or in Italian: "Jacopo stretto parente di sua santita."
