Mr. Samuel Smith was one of the original Croydon carriers, and acquiring a competence, retired from active life. He was much afflicted, having lost the use of his lower limbs. He was not an idle man, however, as those who could see his portly figure through his open door in George-street (now No. 26) could testify. He worked some beautiful pictures in embroidery, at which he was very clever. But it was a the treasurer to a large Court of Foresters that he was best known. He made the keeping of these account his hobby, and for many years it was an honorary office.
