If his age at death is correct, John Spirit would have been 8 or 9 years old at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion.
Though Prince Charlie's army fought their way down the west side of the north of England, many Jacobite prisoners were brought over to York Castle for trial etc. - nearly 200 of them being marched over the Pennines during December 1745, arriving at York in January 1746. It is probable that these were the rebels seen by John Spirit.
