Auction of Long Service Medal 2018


An interesting Second World War London Blitz long service pair awarded to Detective Sergeant 1st Class C.D. Stanley, London Metropolitan Police, who saw service throughout the London Blitz as a member of the Criminal Investigation Department with C Division at St James, being awarded 13 Commendation's during his service, he was awarded five in wartime, the awards covering larceny, burglary, looting, and as a sign of the times - for his 'ability and persistence in a difficult case of conspiracy to procure an abortion'.

He was also involved in the efforts to tackle the early usage of 'cigarettes made from Indian hemp'- marijuana as the 1960's began.

Charles Deryck Stanley was born on 25th June 1912 in Margate, Kent, and having been a seaman, then joined the London Metropolitan Police as a Constable (Warrant No.122689) with D Division at Marylebone on 2nd January 1933.

Transferring to C Division at St James on 1st December 1933, Stanley then joined the Criminal Investigation Department as a Detective Constable on probation on 24th June 1935.

Confirmed in his post with the CID on 29th June 1936, Stanley saw service in this role at St James right through the Second World War including the London Blitz.

Promoted to Detective Sergeant 2nd Class in the CID on 4th June 1945, he then transferred to Z Division at Croydon on 14th April 1947, and to V Division at Wandsworth on 24th November 1947.

Promoted to Detective Sergeant 1st Class in the CID on 14th February 1949, he then transferred on the same date to B Division at Westminster, and finally joined V Division at Wandsworth again on 1st August 1951, Stanley was awarded the long service medal on 24th May 1955, and was pensioned from service on 4th November 1962.

Stanley died in 2008.

During his service, Stanley was awarded no less than 13 Commendation's, all for his time with the Criminal Investigation Department, with five being awarded during wartime, the awards covering larceny, burglary, looting, and as a sign of the times - for his 'ability and persistence in a difficult case of conspiracy to procure an abortion'. His service was also twice mentioned in The Times, one on 31st October 1961, details his giving evidence concerning the selling of 'cigarettes made from Indian hemp'.
