At the lower end of Green Man's-lane is an extensive Fur Manufactory, belonging to Thomas Wontner and Sons, hatters, of the Minories, London, where about 60 persons, of which two thirds are women, are employed in separating and sorting the hair of beaver, seal, and other skins, for the making of hats, and a variety of other purposes, to which it is afterwards applied. A kind of cloth of a very fine and soft texture has been lately made from the fine down of the seal, a specimen of which was to be seen on the premises, in a waistcoat worn by one of the persons employed in the business. In the house attached to this manufactory, Dr. Mayersbach, the celebrated water-doctor, at one time resided, and practised as a physician.
