Morning Chronicle 5 October 1776

To the Printer of the MORNING CHRONICLE

S I R,

THERE has lately been many things in the papers about the famous Water Doctor of Hatton-Garden; but the following reports about him have never, as I have seen, appeared; and they would be as useful in detecting the imposture in this man as any that has appeared about him. It is reported, that he originally was an ostler, or groom, at an inn in some town in Germany, and when reduced, and in want of bread here, applied to the famous Mr. Angelo for employment in his riding school, the way he was brought up in, and actually went through a trial of several weeks employment under that gentleman: when he was dismissed or disapproved of in that capacity, being still in want of bread, the famous Dr. G-, who made a remarkable figure in Lord Baltimore’s trial, set him up in the water casting branch, in which he has done such wonders by giving the copies of some receipts in medicine, which he has on all occasions only literally copied with the same attention as a school-boy exercises in writing of his copy. - These particulars, if true, cannot be unknown to many people in this city, and would contribute as much to open the eyes of the public as any that have appeared,

Your’s, &c.
An ENEMY to IMPOSTORS.
