  6   Whole Company given first Anti-Typhus inoculation.  
  7   Carpenters Shop in Nola Barracks now brought into full production. The machinery includes a bandsaw, a 20" planer, a 20" thicknesser, and a circular saw, obtained by requistioning and recovery of enemy plant. The whole has been fitted up by the Company fitters under Cpl. Walton, and is driven by a captured enemy generator.  
  8   C.E. No.2 District visited Area and gave verbal instructions that Company was to move to come under control No. 11 C.R.E.  
  9   O.C. visited No. 11 C.R.E. at Salerno and obtained instructions that Unit was to move to Portenza; half the Company to be on new location by 12 December.  
  10   O.C. with one Officer and 20 O.R.s as Advance Party proceeded to Portenza to arrange billets.  
  11 1400 Company move cancelled by Chief Engineer.

Remainder of detachment at Cancello returned to H.Q.

  13   Advance party returned from Portenza.

No. 1 Section proceeded on detachment to Torre Annunziata to take over works from 699 A.W. Coy., R.E.

 
NOLA 14   Engineer stores position very unsatisfactory. All powers of requisition and local purchase have now been withdrawn and work will there be seriously slowed down.  
  15   Work started on erecting Romney huts at 11 ESBD Cancello.  
  17   Lieut. Kilner and 25 O.R.s proceeded to Caserta to carry out repairs and construction of kitchen to 14 Canadian General Hospital ; being attched to the Hospital for accommodation and rations.

  22   Work completed on new mess hall in Barracks and brought into use in time for Christmas.

The hall which had been burnt out by the enemy is now unrecognisable and should greatly add to the comfort of the troops.

 
  24   Lieut. Kilner and Caserta detachment returned to HQ for Christmas period.

The Canteen sold a bottle of beer to each man, being the first issue since landing in Italy.

  25   Christmas Day - a holiday.

Breakfast at 0800 hrs. with eggs and bacon : the eggs being powdered were not quite up to standard but it was the best that could be done.

Dinner at 1330 hrs. with roast turkey, chicken, pork and potatoes and cauliflower, Christmas pudding, brandy sauce, mince pies, nuts, oranges, with a bottle of beer and a packet of cigarettes to each man.

Officers and sergeants did the waiting ; the O.C. being seen dishing out cauliflower with great abandon to the manifest amazement of a few stray Sikhs who had strayed into the decorated dining hall.

Tea followed at 1630 hrs. with fruit salad and mince pies for those who wanted it.

Company Funds provided £47 towards the cost of the feast.

 
NOLA 26   A holiday.  
    1600 Lieut, Kilner with No. 4 Section returned to Caserta.  
  30   14 Reinforccements received from No. 1 G.R.T.D. These are the first reinforcements obtained for a very long period and still leaves the Company 32 O.R.s under strength.
