World War II War Diaries
The general form of these records is one folder per calendar month,
which generally contains:
-
Typed forms headed "War Dairy" showing where and when with brief entries.
These rarely name other ranks. These have been photographed and transcribed.
-
Weekly return of officers which does give names.
-
Typed forms "Unit War Diary Appendix A". These give locations, changes
in command, approximate strength, casualties, weather and how the
unit was engaged.
There is an entry for each day.
In the case of both the units Irving served in,
except for the weather, they are usually blank or say "NO CHANGE".
They add little to the "War Dairy" forms.
-
Weekly forms "Field Return of Other Ranks". Sometimes these name
an "Other Rank" whose return to the unit is urgently requested.
-
Miscellaneous reports.
The more interesting ones are noted in the transcripts.
