  3   Thunderstorm, but no serious damage.

13 Corps left GREVE - FIGLINE road reduing traffic considerably

 
  5   Lieut.DW Eadon RE and 2 ORs killed at LEGHORN by an "S" mine, while sweeping area for a car park. Buried at VADA U.S.Military Cemetery map ref. Q.174258 (near CECINA) on 6 Sep.  
  6 2300 Thunderstorm GREVE area. Road washed away between GREVE and FIGLINE.  
  7 1300-1400 Second storm. Saw water 12 ft deep in one 2 barrel culvert but culvert held. Culvert at GREVE washed away.  
    2200 Started Bailey Bridge at Q.895488 to replace washout.  
GREVE 8 0500 Bridge completed. Rained most of evening. 243 Italian Bty Pnr Coy employed on task.

FIGLINE - GREVE road open 0600 but with several one-way stretches over filled-in craters and improvised culverts damaged by rains. It will be at least 10 days before result of storm is repaired.

  10 1900-2100 50 ft. S/S Bailey bridge erected by 1 Pl at QUERCEGROSSA Q820280  
  12 200-2400 80 ft. D/S Bailey bridge erected at GREVE. Bridge was dismantled from another site and reerected here.  
  13   Took over maintenance Bailey Bridges 229/100 - 229/109

U.S. II Corps Engrs took over task of dismantling Baileys 229/8 - 229/13 started by 1 Pl yesterday

  14   U.S. Engineers took down QUERCEGROSSA Bailey to surprise of this company.  
GREVE 15   1 Pl (Lt.HS Barnes RE) move to PONTASSIEVE to concrete? foundation to 3 span Bailey Bridge (100 - 100 - 110 T/D Class 70) and to maintain FLORENCE - PONTASSIEVE road. The road is in good condition apart from approx. 6 craters. Task of conreting involves two foundations each of 450 tons. American mixer 14/10 available. It is interesting to note that operators always accompany American equipment which is a good feature and well illustrated by late experience when U.S. mixer was replaced with 2 British mixers.  
  16     A.F.W3008 and 3009A
  21   2 Pl spent night at FIESOLE enroute [sic] to CALDINE on Arrow Route. Their task will be maintenance of Arrow Route FLORENCE (via FAETINA) to CALDINE and FLORENCE (San Domenica) - FIESOLE - L'OLMO to 75 Northing.  
  22   Companny H.Q. moved to CALDINE  
CALDINE 23   3 Pl (Lt.MAS Williams RE) moved to TROGHI from LEGHORN. The Pl has lifted the following mines from LEGHORN area and waterworks N of PISA :- Teller No.2 - 823 Teller No.4 - 481 Italian Box (4 igniter) - 2224 "S" mines - 61. 3Pl task at TROGHI erection of improvised R.S.J. and trestle bridge at Q.935585 A.F.W.3008 and 3009A
  24   2 Pl liability extended to 82 Northing.  
  30   1 Pl (Lt.HS.Barnes RE) less 1 sec moved from PONTASSIEVE area to OLMI. Task, maintenance of Arrow Route 82 Northing to BORGO SAN LORENZO exclusive.

2 Pl (Lt. R Hodges RE) at CALDINE maintaining Arrow Rout FLORENCE - 82 Northing.

3 Pl (Lt. MAS Williams RE) at TROGHI erecting improvised timber trestle bridge at Q.935585. Bridge is two span, 21' and 15' 6" Class 40 single way. R.S. channels were salvaged from ruins at PONTASSIEVE.

CALDINE 30   A list of all Bailey Bridges maintained during the month is given in Appendix "J". Comments on improvement of G.1098 of a Field Company are given also at Appendix "J".

Transport generally is scarce for such tasks as returning Bailey Bridge equipment to dumps. The Company has 6 tippers attached.
