Court Martial of Joseph William Mayersbeth - Page 21

  11.
5th witness
contd.
By the court:-

The accused was with me about 3 hours before I
went out at 10pm. We had some drink that night.
Perhaps a drink each. Spirits are hard to get &
my stock was rather low. Mr Anderson & Mr Elliot
did not bring any drink with them.

There are 6 officers in my company mess. I think
there were 5 in the mess that night for dinner.

We certainly had no more than 2 drinks each -
the accused & I. We drank whiskey & water.

The men were 7 or 8 yards away from us when they
started to run. I can't say whether they were drunk.
I was not sufficiently near to Haskins to say whether
he was drunk or sober.

The accused was in the room with me for 2 or 3 minutes
when he returned at 10.30pm. He was sitting down,
no one else was present, & we were talking. Then the
shouting occurred & we both ran out.

His evidence is read to the witness. R.P.83B. is
complied with. The witness withdraws.

The prosecution is closed.
