Next door to Tottie Foster was the shop of John Ellis, who sold groceries and sweets.

Westgate Baildon
John Ellis, builder and contractor, lived near the present Moravian Institute. An Irish woman called Sally Case, who kept geese, used to steal his coal. One day Ellis got in a lot of pitch, which Sally thought was coal. As usual she stole some and threw it on her fire, but, of course, it melted and ran all over her hearth. She was very angry and declared that she would not have any more coal from John Ellis.
